Home healthcare and field-based professionals face unique and growing risks of workplace violence due to close contact with patients, families, and the public in uncontrolled environments. The HEART program delivers first-of-its-kind, evidence-based safety training designed to prepare staff to recognize, avoid, and respond effectively to threats in the home and community.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn to:
Conduct rapid environmental and situational assessments before and during home visits.
Apply proxemics and positioning strategies to maintain safe personal space.
Enhance vehicle safety and preparedness for arrivals, departures, and transit.
Respond confidently to public active-threat or active-shooter incidents.
Use verbal de-escalation and behavioral awareness to prevent conflict escalation.
Integrate research-supported safety habits into daily practice.
Target Audience
Ideal for home healthcare workers, social workers, public health nurses, case managers, and other mobile professionals who engage with clients in home or community settings.
Methodology
HEART combines short lectures, guided discussion, and hands-on scenarios grounded in open-source and published research. Participants practice real-world skills to assess risk, set boundaries, and take proactive safety actions during home visits.
